~week 3: presentation~

On 20th July 2010, we were devided into 6 groups, and each group had to present on the subtopic in the 1st chapter of Susan Halliwell's " Teaching English in the Primary School". My group need to present

1.1 Children's ability to grasp meaning.

Young children are able to understand what is being said to them even before they understand the individual words. Intonation, gesture, facial expressions, actions and circumtances help them to understand unkown words and phrases.
The children come to primary school with these skills. At this stage, they find it difficult to follow verbal instruction and information given by the teacher. To help them interpret new sounds, new words, new structures, they called the same skills that they had before. As a teacher,we support the children by making sure we make full use of gesture, intonation, demonstration, actions and facial expressions to convey meaning parralel to what we are saying.
